When Does a Pool Need Replastering?

By Aqua Aesthetics · Updated October 6, 2026

The plaster inside a pool is a wearing surface. Water chemistry, sun and time slowly break it down. Most pool surfaces last 10 to 15 years, and the pool usually tells you when it is time.

Signs the Surface Is Worn Out

  • It feels rough. Worn plaster scrapes feet and snags swimsuits.
  • Stains that don't come out with brushing or treatment.
  • Grey or dark patches where the plaster has worn thin and the shell shows through.
  • Flaking, peeling or hollow-sounding spots where the plaster has let go of the shell.
  • Cracks in the surface.
  • The water is harder to keep balanced than it used to be.

Is It a Surface Problem or a Leak?

New plaster does not fix a leak. If the pool is losing more water than normal evaporation, have the leak found and repaired first. We check for this before recommending a new surface.

Choosing a New Finish

  • Plaster: the classic smooth, white finish and the lowest cost.
  • Quartz: plaster blended with quartz for more color choices and a harder surface.
  • Pebble: small stones set in the surface. It has the most texture and generally lasts the longest.

What Else to Do While the Pool Is Empty

Resurfacing means draining the pool, which makes it the easiest time for other work. Many owners replace the tile and coping, upgrade to LED lights, or add a spa or water feature at the same time. Doing it together almost always costs less than doing it separately later.

How Long It Takes

A basic resurfacing typically takes one to two weeks. A full remodel with deck work, new equipment and water features can take four to eight weeks. You get a clear schedule before any work starts.
