Pools don't wear out all at once. The surface, tile, coping, deck and equipment age at roughly the same pace, though, so when one is done the others are usually close. These are the signs to look for.
The Surface
- Plaster that feels rough or scrapes feet.
- Stains that won't come out.
- Dark or gray patches where the surface has worn thin.
- Flaking or hollow spots.
Tile, Coping and Mastic
- Cracked, missing or scaled tile.
- Coping that is loose, cracked or lifting.
- Mastic that is cracked, brittle or gone.
The Deck
- Cracks, or sections that have lifted or sunk.
- A surface that is flaking, slippery or too hot to walk on.
- Water that drains toward the pool or the house.
Equipment
- A loud, old single-speed pump.
- A heater that is unreliable.
- Power bills that keep climbing.
- Lights that have failed or are dim.
It No Longer Fits How You Use It
Sometimes nothing is broken. The pool is simply dated, or the family has changed. A remodel is the time to add a spa or tanning ledge, change the shape of the steps, add water features, or rework the deck around how you live now.
Why Do It Together
Most of this work needs the pool drained and the edge of the deck opened up. Doing surface, tile, coping and mastic in one project costs less than doing each on its own, and everything ends up matching.
