Plaster, Quartz or Pebble: Which Is Right for Your Pool?

By Aqua Aesthetics · Updated October 8, 2026

When a pool is built or resurfaced, the last thing to go in is the surface you see and touch. There are three main choices, and the right one depends on your budget, how the pool is used and how long you plan to stay in the house.

Plaster

The classic choice. Smooth underfoot, bright and clean, and the lowest cost of the three. It is also the softest, so it shows wear and staining sooner and is the most sensitive to water chemistry.

Quartz

Plaster with crushed quartz blended in. It is harder and more stain resistant than standard plaster, comes in a wide range of colors, and still feels fairly smooth. It sits in the middle on price.

Pebble

Small, smooth stones set into the surface. Pebble is the most durable and the most forgiving of water chemistry, and it gives the water a deep, natural color. It has more texture underfoot and costs the most up front.

How to Choose

  • Budget: plaster costs least to install, pebble most.
  • How long you'll own the home: a longer-lasting surface pays off the longer you stay.
  • Feel: if a smooth surface matters most, look at plaster or quartz.
  • Water color: the surface color sets the color of the water more than anything else.

See It Before You Decide

Photos and small samples only tell you so much, because every surface looks different under water and in Texas sun. At your consultation we bring samples, show you finished pools in each material, and price the options side by side.
