Can You Add a Spa or Tanning Ledge to an Existing Pool?

By Aqua Aesthetics · Updated October 8, 2026

You don't have to build a new pool to get the features you wish it had. A spa or a tanning ledge can usually be added to an existing pool. How involved it is depends on the pool, the yard and the equipment you already have.

Adding a Spa

A spa is tied into the existing pool structure and given its own plumbing, jets and, usually, a spillway into the pool. It needs a heater sized for it and controls to switch between pool and spa. If the pool already has a heater and automation, some of that can be reused.

Adding a Tanning Ledge

A tanning ledge is a wide, shallow shelf for loungers and for small children to play on. It can be built inside the existing pool or as an extension of it. It often gets its own bubblers or umbrella sleeve.

What Decides Whether It Works

  • Space in the yard, and how close the pool is to property lines and easements.
  • Access for equipment and materials.
  • The condition of the existing shell.
  • Whether the pump, filter and heater can handle the addition.
  • City permits, which we handle for you.

The Best Time to Do It

Both additions mean cutting into the shell, draining the pool and refinishing the surface. That makes a remodel the natural time, since the pool is already empty and the plaster, tile and coping are being redone anyway. Adding a feature during a remodel almost always costs less than doing it as a separate project later.
