How Often Should a Pool Filter Be Cleaned?

By Aqua Aesthetics · Updated October 8, 2026

The filter is what actually removes dirt, algae and oils from your pool. As it fills up, water has a harder time getting through, and everything downstream suffers. Most filters in North Texas need a thorough cleaning a few times a year, and more often after storms or an algae problem.

Signs Your Filter Is Overdue

  • The pressure gauge reads well above its normal clean reading.
  • Water coming out of the return jets is weak.
  • The water stays cloudy even when the chemistry is right.
  • The pool cleaner has slowed down or stopped moving.
  • The pump sounds like it is working harder than usual.

What a Dirty Filter Costs You

A clogged filter makes the pump push against high pressure all day, which uses more power and shortens the life of the motor and seals. Poor flow can shut a heater down. And water that isn't being filtered turns cloudy, then green.

Why It Is Worth Having Done Properly

A real filter cleaning means opening the tank, taking the elements out, cleaning them thoroughly, checking each one for tears and cracks, and reassembling it so it seals under pressure. Parts inside the filter are easy to damage and expensive to replace, and a filter that is put back together wrong can leak or send dirt straight back into the pool.

It is also the moment to spot worn parts before they fail in the middle of summer.
