Pools here stay open all year, so there is no big spring opening. There is, however, a long hot season coming, and it is hard on equipment and water. Problems that were easy to ignore in February turn into a green pool or a dead pump in July, when every pool company is booked.
What Should Be Checked Before Summer
- Pump and motor: noise, leaks and worn seals.
- Filter: a full cleaning and an inspection of what is inside.
- Heater: that it fires, if you use the spa.
- Salt system, automation and timers: that they work and are set for summer.
- Water chemistry: a full test, not only chlorine and pH.
- Water level: any sign the pool is losing water.
- Tile, coping and mastic: anything loose, cracked or open after winter freezes.
- Lights, handrails, drain covers and gates: the safety items.
Why Before, Not During
Equipment tends to fail under load, and summer is when the load is highest. A pump with worn bearings or a filter that is overdue will often make it through spring and then quit in the first heat wave. Parts and service appointments are also much easier to get before the season starts.
A Good Time to Start Weekly Service
From April through October, weekly service is what keeps a North Texas pool clear. Starting before the heat arrives means the water is already balanced and the equipment has been checked when the pool starts getting used every day.
